Guide to Power Strips and Surge Protectors
What is the difference between a power strip and a surge protector?
People confuse the two because they look exactly the same. I ca n’t tell you how many people went to the store to buy a surge protector, and when they got home, they found a power strip.
The difference is that the power strip is just an extension cord with many sockets. That’s all. There is another element inside the surge protector, as far as electrical is concerned, it will “clamp” the surge. This means that it will make the wave disappear from the downstream computer, your flat-screen TV, stereo or other electronic products that you do not want to be damaged.
Is there a limit to what I can plug in or how many things?
Yes. Just because the power strip has eight sockets does not mean that you can or should plug in eight things. It depends on what you want to insert: in some cases, such as an alarm clock or a cooling fan does not consume that much power, and even a computer or a TV does not consume a lot of power.
But heating products, such as toasters, hair dryers, electric cookers or electric cookers, consumes more power or current. For continuously used electrical appliances (such as space heaters or cookware), each power board should be fixed to one of them.
If you do not limit the number of heating products or equipment, it is easy to overload the switchboard or surge protector and trip the circuit breaker.
Similarly, if your home’s power board and surge protector are very old, it is time to call an electrician or contractor. Repair in time and replace the power board at home to better avoid danger and protect the health of you and your family.
Can power strips be a fire hazard?
If a power strip has a long cord and you don’t want anybody to trip over it, never throw a rug over the cord. It’s one of the worst things you can do. People will walk over it for a year or two years or five years and ultimately that will start breaking wires in that cord. The wires could start heating up, capturing the heat, creating a smoldering fire. Our statistics show those seem to happen in the middle of the night. It could be very, very dangerous.
The power board is not cleaned all year round, and dust accumulation may also cause the power board to catch fire and cause a fire, so we should pay attention to the cleaning of the power board in peacetime.
